Writing Assessments
Teacher Managed Assessments
These assessments are the kind that you will input into CPS. The whole class will answer each question together at the same time. It is normally best to use these sorts of assessments as "checks for understanding", or as a way to review. They are not the best way to use clickers to formally assess studets-student managed assessments work better for that purpose.
1. You will need to click on the lessons tab in the CPS software. If you are opening CPS, it should open automatically to this tab.
2.Next, you will need to click on the "new"lesson icon (it looks like a paper with a plus symbol next to it. You will then be asked to give your lesson a title (If you want to, you may fill in a description as well, although it probably isn't necessary as long as your lessons have different titles).
3.You will then see the lesson title pop up in the "lesson name" box. Click on the lesson that you are working on. Next, you will need to click on "new question" (icon of a question mark with a plus sign).
4. Now you are ready to write! Your question goes in the big box at the top of the page. You are able to choose which font you would like as well as font size at the top of the window. The option that says "template" will allow you to choose how many options you would like for answers, or if you would like to include a graphic as well.
5. Once you finish your first question, choose the icon with the floppy disk and forward arrow to move on to the next question. You can use those icons to move forward or backward. Continue typing questions until you are finished writing your assessment.
6. Once you are done with your questions, choose the icon with just the floppy disk to save your final question. You can then close out that window.
7. When you are ready to use the assessment in class, follow the set up procedures and find your lesson. You will click once on the lesson to highlight it, then choose "engage" (clicker icon). The next screen that pops up will allow you to choose what sort of session you want the activity to be (class participation, quiz, exam, etc) as well as which class is taking the assessment. You should also have the mode set to "teacher managed assessment".
8. Click "start" and you are ready to go! You'll need to move the kids throught each question using the options on the lower right hand corner during this kind of clicker activity.
Student Managed Assessments
These assesments do not have to be put into CPS ahead of time. You will write your questions in a word document and print them out like you would a "traditional" test. You'll also learn how to use the "fast grade" option of the CPS software. These sorts of assessments are best used for formal assessments since each student has their own copy of the test and students work at their own pace.
1. Write your questions in the word processor of your choice. You will then need top print/copy enough tests for each student in your class to have their own copy of the assessment.
2. In the CPS software, you will need to open up the "lessons" tab. You will see an icon intitled "fast grade"-the icon looks like a paper speeding by.
3. Once you choose "fast grade" you will be asked to give your lesson a title.
4. The template that pops up will look a little strange. A couple of important things to note: at the top of the window, you will see "Number of questions" and "current question". "Number of Questions" shows you how many COMPLETED answers are in that lesson whereas "current question" tells you which question answer you are inputting at that moment. Underneath there are a variety of choices-from true/false to MC2. The purpose of these is to tell the computer which sort of question was being asked with the answer that you are inputting. It is important to put these in correctly so that the computer knows how many options there were for each question. It's also very valuable in the reports!
5. Input your answers. For example, if the first question in my test was a muultiple choice question with 4 answers with the correct answer being "B", I would click "B" under MC4. **Note, the "number of questions now reads "1" and "current question" now reads "2"
6. Continue inputting your answers. When you are finished, click on "save lesson" at the bottom of the window.
7. To run the assessment in your classroom, follow the set up procedures and find your lesson. You will click once on the lesson to highlight it, then choose "engage" (clicker icon). The next screen that pops up will allow you to choose what sort of session you want the activity to be (class participation, quiz, exam, etc) as well as which class is taking the assessment. You should also have the mode set to "student managed assessment".
8. The screen that appears will look very different from the teacher managed assessment. There will be a picture of a clicker on the top left side of the screen. The numbers across from that icon represent your students' clicker nnumbers. The number underneath those boxes and across from the "?" icon tell your student which number they are currently answering. Therefore, the numbers in the top boxes don't change since they are the clicker numbers-only the bottom numbers change as students progress through the assessment. You will need to click the "start" tab on the lower right hand corner of the screen to allow your students to input their answers.
9. One final note-tell your students that if they wish to change an answer to use the forward and backward arrows under the letters G and F on their clicker to navigate to the question they wish to change. They will be able to tell which question they are on because the number underneath their clicker number will advance or regress.
10. Once all students are finsihed, both squares should be a solid blue. Click on "end" in the bottom right corner to finish the assessment.
