Process

1) Get together with your assigned group.

2)Each person in the group will have a role.  Decide who in your group will do each role.

  • Museum Curator:  This student will be responsible to research about the art itself.  You need to discover what genre the artists belong to as well as the time period during which they painted.  You’ll also need to find what contributions each artist made to the art world in general.  You will also be responsible for finding examples of their most famous works and talking about where those pieces of work are today.  (In what museum?  What city?)
  • Art Historian:  This student will be responsible for studying each artist through the historical perspective.  You will find out about the time period that each artist lived in as well as what major world events were happening during that time.  You will also need to find ways to connect different works of the artists to the historical events of that time.
  • Political Analyst:  This student will be responsible for understanding the politics of Spain during that time period.  They will want to learn about any conflicting political ideas between the artist and the Spanish Government.  They will also want to research whom the rulers and leaders of the Spanish Government during that time.
  • Biographer:  This person will be responsible for learning about the artists’ lives from birth to death.  They will find out who they studied with, where they lived, who influenced their works, etc.  Where they married?  What were their personal lives like?

3)Once you know what your role is, you should start researching.  Please use the links provided under each author on the resources page to get you started.

4)After you have completed your research, you need to decide based on your specific role which artist should receive the title.  You should have a clear decision based on comparison and contrast to the other authors in a written format to present to your group.  You need to have enough copies of your written paper for everyone in the group to have their own to read. (You will also post your findings in the Share and Compare page of this web quest)

5)Your group will get together to discuss your findings.  Each member of your group will talk about their choice for the Official National Artist of Spain.

6)Based on the choices of your group members, your group as a whole must choose one artist to receive the honorary distinction.

7)Your group now needs to put together a proposal outlining why the artist you chose is the best one for the title.  Again, use a comparison and contrast method to rationalize your choice. (These proposals will also be posted in the Share and Compare page)

8)Your group must put together a presentation to the Board of Directors that uses some sort of Multimedia.  (You may make a video, use PowerPoint, etc.)

9)The Board will hear all arguments and presentations and then will select “The Official National Artist of Spain”.
